Description

The Coach House, located approximately 60 metres north of Swinithwaite Hall, is a coach house and stables built around 1800 by John Foss of Richmond. It is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical façade with two sets of two bays. The central section of the building projects slightly and is accentuated by quoins.

The ground floor includes two elliptical-arched coach openings with ashlar surrounds and board doors, along with a decorative band. On the first floor, there is a shuttered window and a pitching door with interrupted jambs, topped by a band that forms a pedimented gable. The gable itself features a semicircular dovecote set in an ashlar surround with a keystone, and the gable is corniced.

The outer ranges of the building have openings with ashlar surrounds and segmental-arched lintels. Between the first and second bays, as well as between the fifth and sixth bays, there are four-panel doors set in surrounds on plinths. The ground-floor windows include part-shuttered stable windows, while the first floor has hayloft openings with latticed shutters. The roofs are hipped.
