Description
Belvedere is a summerhouse dated 1792, designed by John Foss of Richmond for T.J. Anderson of Swinithwaite Hall. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a lead roof and has an octagonal plan over two storeys. The ground floor features a plain plinth and vermiculated rustication with round-headed panels of plain ashlar, mostly forming blind openings. There is a door with six flush panels on the east side and a sash window with glazing bars on the north side, below which the date is carved. Above, a parapet with balustraded panels surrounds the structure, except over the door, where there is a sculpture of a talbot. The first floor is set back behind a walkway and is made of plain ashlar with round-headed panels, containing a door on the east side and windows on three alternate sides, with the intermediate sides being blind. It has a modillion cornice and a blocking course, topped by a shallow dome.
Inside, the ground-floor room includes a cast-iron range, a boiler, and deep window seats, along with a domed ceiling made of stone. There is also a closet between the inner and outer walls and a stone staircase leading up to the parapet walkway, which provides external access only to the upper room. This upper room features a cast-iron fireplace and fine Neo-classical plasterwork.
