Description
This is a disused lime kiln located in Keldishaw field, probably built in the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone and limestone rubble, arranged in courses, with stone slate lacing. The kiln has a rectangular shape with battered front and sides, measuring 6.2 meters wide at the base and 5.7 meters deep, facing east, and features an earth ramp at the rear. Currently, it stands approximately 5.4 meters high but is missing the top two or three courses. There is a flat-arched opening to the draw-hole, which has rubble voussoirs, and a round bowl on top that is partly filled in. This kiln is a good example of its type and is situated close to the former limestone quarry known as Stoney Rigg.
