Description
The Boer War Memorial, located approximately 40 meters north of the Chapel at Sedbergh School, is a war memorial likely built between 1902 and 1905. It honors eight former pupils of Sedbergh School who lost their lives in the Second South African War (1899-1902). The memorial is constructed from red sandstone and features a square plan. It has a four-step plinth with a square base that includes a lettered panel on each side. The shaft is square and tapered, with chamfered corners and a chamfered cornice topped by a wheel cross. Each panel on the base displays two bands of raised lettering in the Arts-and-Crafts style, listing the names and units of the fallen along with the dates and places of their deaths, including one individual who was awarded the Victoria Cross.
