Description

Scar View Cottage and the former garage adjoining is a cottage dating from the late 17th century, which has been converted for use as a garage and is now an art gallery. The building has been extended to the south and features later alterations. It is constructed of slobbered rubble with quoins on the extension and has graduated slate roofs with stone-flagged eaves on the garage. The cottage is oriented at right angles to the road and includes an outshut and a wing, with a 19th-century gallery at the rear.

The structure is two storeys tall and comprises seven bays overall, arranged as four on one side and three on the other. There are 20th-century doors on the south return and the north side of the wing, located under the gallery. A plank door with a chamfered surround is found at the rear of the garage, also under the gallery.

On the east elevation, there are two inserted garage doors on the right-hand block, while the left-hand block features three two-light windows (one of which was originally a three-light window) with chamfered mullions, and a single-light window, all of which are casements in chamfered surrounds. The first floor on the right has a two-light window with a flat mullion and two single-light windows, all casements in chamfered surrounds. The left side has two sash windows and a tripartite sash window, all with glazing bars.

At the rear of the garage, there is a projecting stair that is semicircular in plan, along with a small first-floor casement window with a chamfered semicircular-headed surround. A flat-roofed dormer is present at the rear of the left-hand block. The building has stone mid and end chimneys and is linked to Scar Cottage on the west side by a wing and gallery.
