Description
Hellenstead Barn is a barn that likely dates from the 18th century and was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century. It features rubble walls and a stone slate roof. A central waggon porch has been added to the front, with a laithe to the right. On the left side, there is an entrance that has a reused 17th-century moulded doorhead, which features a halberd head in bar relief at either end. The soffit of this doorhead has been trimmed to fit the opening and is believed to be the lintel removed from Hanlith Hall before its rebuilding in 1892, as illustrated in J W Morkill's "The Parish of Kirkby Malhamdale" (1933). The left-hand gable has exposed throughs, and there is a c1970 extension on the right-hand gable. Inside, the barn has a 19th-century kingpost roof. The barn is included in the heritage register mainly because of the significance of the lintel.
