Description

Town End Cottage is a house and shop, dated 1732. It is located on the west side of Main Street in Malham. The building is constructed of roughly-faced rubble stone with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and has two bays. The front elevation incorporates two recessed mullioned windows on each floor, with plain surrounds; the ground floor windows have three lights, and the upper floor windows have two lights. All windows contain 20th-century glazing. A central ridge stack is made of dressed stone. An entrance is located in the left-hand return, featuring a moulded surround. The lintel above the entrance is inscribed with the initials ‘RMH’, a heart-shaped device, and the date ‘1732’. A 20th-century extension is present on part of the left-hand gable, with two storeys and one bay. It was previously incorrectly shown on Ordnance Survey maps as Down End Cottage.
