Description

The Rookery is a house with origins from the late 17th century, which was refronted in the late 18th century and extended in the late 19th century. It is constructed of rubble with stone dressings and has a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys tall and features a double front. The door, located to the left of the center, has a plain surround and is flanked by brackets that support a pediment. This 19th-century door includes Gothick glazing. The windows have raised hollow chamfered surrounds. To the left, there is a moulded doorway leading into the original entrance lobby, which has been blocked and features a 19th-century quatrefoil light. There are stone stacks on the right-hand gable and a ridge stack at the junction of the original house and the extension.

The slightly projecting one-bay extension to the left is made of rock-faced stone and has a raised band between the floors, along with modillions at the eaves. It also features a gable end stack with twin octagonal shafts. All windows in this extension have late 19th-century sashes without glazing bars. The rear of the building has windows from various dates, including one 17th-century window with three lights and chamfered mullions. Inside, there is a massive inglenook fireplace aligned with the original doorway, featuring a large stone segmental bressummer made in three pieces, with lines incised to represent voussoirs, a style common until the late 17th century.
