Description
This Roman milestone, made of dressed stone, is located approximately 74 meters to the west of the road on the A683 in Middleton. It dates back to Roman times and features a cylindrical shaft that stands about 1,676 millimeters high and has a diameter of 457 millimeters. The east side of the milestone displays the inscription "MP LIII," indicating that it is 53 miles to Carlisle. Below this inscription, there is another inscription that reads "SOLO ERVTVM/RESTITVIT/GVL MOORE/AN MDCCCXXXVI," which was added by historian Dr. Lingard to commemorate its discovery and re-erection by W. Moore in 1836. The west side shows diagonal scratch marks, likely made by ploughs. This milestone is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
