Description
The remains of Claxton Castle are a fortified house located on the north side of Claxton The Street. A licence to castellate was granted to William de Kerdiston in 1333, and the existing remains are likely from a later date. The structure is built from brick, flint, and limestone and features a long wall with three round towers. At the east end, there are remains of a stair, and the wall has openings with elliptical brick arches. On the north face of the wall, there is a large off-centre arched opening that is now blocked, with one tower positioned against the western jamb of the archway on the south side. The site shows evidence of many blocked openings and quoins. There are twin towers at the south-east corner connected by a low-level arch, and the western tower contains a staircase. Additionally, there is a thatched lean-to summer house at the west end. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, County No. 149.
