Description

Claxton Manor is a country house that originated in the 17th century, with significant additions and remodelling from the 19th century. The exterior is constructed of flint and red brick, whitewashed on the north side, with roofs that are either plain tiled or pantiled and steeply pitched. The house has two storeys and attics, and is partly double pile. The south facade, which dates from the 19th century, is symmetrical with five bays and features two storeys. It has cross casements set in chamfered and rusticated stone surrounds, complete with square label-moulds.

A central porch, which is two storeys high, has a stepped stone string course around the doorway, and a rectangular fanlight with three lights above the door, which has a four-centred head. The upper storey features a 3-light casement with a pediment. The eaves are moulded with a sawtooth design, and the gables are parapeted with stone kneelers, a single step, and a square apex.

At the rear, there is an earlier range that includes 19th-century casements with chamfered mullions and transoms in segmental-headed openings. A large external chimney stack, capped off, is located at the north-east corner, along with two additional chimney stacks on the north wall. The house features two gabled dormers with shaped barge boards and 2-light casements. The shaped east gable has ground floor and first floor 4-light casements, along with a 3-light casement in the attic from the 20th century. The ground floor window is set within a large elliptical arched opening with spandrels, while the first floor window is in a chamfered reveal with a rebuilt pediment featuring brick dentils. There is a lower two-storey link block at the south-east with a parapet and a hipped pantiled roof.
