Description
The West Somerton Marsh Draining Pump is a tower draining pump built in 1900 by Dan England. It features a tapering three-storey brick tower with a timber cap. The south side has a steel door set in a reduced segmental opening. There are semi-circular sluice openings on the south-west and north-east sides, which are now blocked with concrete. A casement window under a segmental arch is located on the south-west side at the first floor, and there is a similar window on the second storey to the north-east. The structure is topped with a weatherboarded boat-shaped cap and petticoat, and it retains intact fan cradle beams. There are two flat-topped dormers on the sides of the cap and two windows at the ends, all of which were added in the later 20th century. Inside, the machinery includes a cast iron crown spur wheel that drives an internal turbine pump.
