Description

Burnley Hall is a house dating from the early 18th century, located in East Somerton. It is a brick building with slate roofs, arranged in a "H" plan with two storeys and a dormer attic. The south front has seven bays, with the central three bays recessed. The side bays project and have rusticated brick quoins. A late 18th-century open pediment doorcase is centrally positioned, featuring two unfluted columns supporting a Doric block entablature. The original door has been replaced by a window, but it retains its wavy fanlight. Late 19th-century plate glass sash windows are present on the ground floor. A wide platband runs around the building between the floors. Seven late 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches are on the first floor; the central window has an original flush surround and a shouldered brick architrave. The roofs are hipped, with four gabled dormers containing sash windows (two on the main roof, and one on each projecting side bay roof). Five large multiply-flued stacks are present, with those on the east and west gables partly external, all rebuilt in 1982.

To the east is a single-storey extension from 1816, originally a billiard room, featuring three tall late 19th-century sash windows, a dentil eaves cornice below a parapet, and a glazed hipped roof. A separate entrance is positioned in the angle with the main block. The platband of the main house continues into the returns, running over the external stacks. The returns are in four bays. A subsidiary western entrance has a late 18th-century fluted Doric portico porch, with a panelled door and reveals. Below are two sashes, and above are four sashes on the west return, all with late 18th-century glazing bars and gauged skewback arches, along with two gabled dormers similar to those on the main roof. The east returns are similar, but with 19th-century additions obscuring part of the facade. The rear of the house is a mixture of 19th-century additions, but the "H" plan remains visible.

The interior hall, now a lounge, features raised large frame panelling, two 6-panel doors within shouldered surrounds, and shouldered panelling acting as a fireplace overmantel. A moulded cornice is also present. The dining room has similar stained panelling, with a vertical dado and a moulded cornice; the windows have H hinges for original shutters. Other ground floor rooms are similarly decorated. An open-well staircase rises to the attic, featuring a closed string, heavy iron twist balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newel posts. Dado panelling is present on the walls.

The group value context recognises the building’s special architectural and historic significance.
