Description

Clarkes Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, which underwent significant alterations in the 18th century when its timber-framed structure was re-fronted and covered in brick. The building is whitewashed and features a thatched roof with a lobby entrance plan. The south front has one storey and a dormer attic, with a 20th-century brick, timber, and glazed porch. To the left, there is a 20th-century bay window, and to the right, an 18th-century iron 3-light casement window. A 20th-century brick and glazed outshut closes the facade on the right. The roof is gabled and hipped to the west, with two through-eaves dormers under eyebrow thatching, both containing 3-light casements. Above the door, there is a triple diamond flue ridge stack on a rectangular plinth, with the flues having been rebuilt. An internal stack is located at the east gable end. The rear features a full-length 20th-century pantiled outshut and two dormers under eyebrow thatching. Inside, the farmhouse has a close-studded timber frame made of heavy scantling. In the lounge, there is a multiply rolled bridging beam from the early 16th century, and a winder staircase is positioned by the stack. A blocked mullioned window remains under the eaves at the rear, and one Queen post from the original roof type is still present, although most of the roof has been renewed.
