Description

A barn dating to the late 16th century stands 20 metres south east of the remains of Barsham Hall. The barn is timber framed and clad in weatherboarding, with parapet gable ends constructed of random flint and red brick, topped with square pinnacles. It has a pantiled roof. The barn comprises six bays, with the two eastern bays partitioned off and containing a later intermediate floor, presumably for use as stables. The timber frame features heavy full-height studs that lack wall bracing, and it is believed the original cart entrance was located in the westernmost bay. Short arched braces connect the wall posts to the tie beams. The roof structure includes butt purlins, clasped purlins against diminished principal rafters, and one-way plank wind bracing, except in the western bay which has 2-way wind bracing.
