Description
The Old School House is a former school house that has been converted into a private dwelling. It dates from the early 19th century and is built of colourwashed brick with a slate roof. The building is one storey high and features a symmetrical facade with two five-light casement windows that have ovolo mullions and pediments above the window openings.
At the center, there is a projecting porch with a segmental-headed door set in a square opening, which has decorative spandrels. The door is framed by a moulded and plastered surround, complete with key and impost blocks, and there is a pediment above the door opening with a recessed stone panel above it. On either side of the porch, there are one-light windows with drip moulds and chamfered reveals.
The gables are parapeted and coped, featuring shaped designs with octagonal finials. There are internal gable chimney stacks with octagonal brick shafts, with two on the north side and one on the south. The eaves are decorated with dogtooth brickwork. There are lean-to extensions on the east side, which include some 20th-century casement windows. The building is included for its group value with the nearby church of St. John the Baptist.
