Description
Langley Abbey remains are the ruins of an abbey house founded in 1195 for Premonstratensian Canons. The remains date primarily from the 13th and 15th centuries and are constructed of flint with some limestone dressings. The site includes the abbey church, which features a north aisle (with the south aisle incorporated into the cloister), transepts, and a chancel with north and south chapels. There is also a chapter house with a dormitory range to the east of the cloister, an infirmary, and some remnants of the refectory. Notably, the early 13th-century entrance arch to the chapter house is pointed with plain chamfers and has a deeply cusped inner order supported by moulded corbels, along with two plain flanking windows that have pointed heads. The south wall shows remains of blank arcading, and there is a single staged corner buttress from the 15th century, which is part of the infirmary. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
