Description

The Eel Sett is a simple single-cell building used for overnight accommodation by eel catchers, dating from the early 20th century.

Constructed with a timber frame and vertical shiplap boarding, the building is topped with a metal roof. It is a single-storey structure with one room, facing north towards Candle Dyke, which flows into the River Thurne. The exterior features vertical shiplap boarding finished with tar and a profiled red metal roof. Both gables have bargeboards and pinnacles, and the north gable displays a projecting 'Stop Eel Net' sign. The entrance door is made of shiplap boarding and has a rope handle. Each of the east, south, and west elevations includes a window, all with square wooden frames and a single light.

Inside, the building retains a high degree of original features, including joinery details around the door and window frames, and a stable-style ledge and brace door with two locks. Each window is secured with three horizontal metal bars. There are two wooden bunks fixed to the eastern and western walls, facing each other, with a stove located against the south wall between them. Beneath the bunks are cupboards with simple handles and turn-button latches, allowing access to the space underneath the seats. In the north-west corner, there is a fixed cupboard with a similar handle and latch. A freestanding sink is positioned in the north-east corner, and across the north gable at eaves level is a shelf for storage. The walls and ceiling are framed with simple battens.
