Description
Churchgate House, which includes Nos 1 and 2, is a house that has been subdivided. It dates from the 18th century, with early 19th-century extensions at the rear and a south side extension built in 1931 that matches the original style. The walls are made of painted brickwork in header bond, while the rear features Flemish Garden Wall bond with rubbed flat arches. The roof is tiled, hipped at the south end, and there is a low-pitched hipped slate roof on one of the rear extensions.
The east front elevation is two storeys high with four windows, all of which are sash windows. There are two doorways, one of which is older, each featuring a cornice supported by carved brackets, an architrave, and a six-panelled door with two top glazed panels. The rear wings enclose a former staircase wing that retains an original upper window and staircase, along with early 19th-century sash windows. On the south side, there are service buildings made of brick with a tiled roof, and another building along the roadside has a slate roof and a boarded gable with a hayloft door above a carriage opening.
