Description

The remains of the town walls in Lewes are of historical significance, with foundations that may date back to before the Conquest. Above these foundations are sections of 13th and 14th-century walls, which are partially topped by 18th and 19th-century walls that were restored in the 20th century. The structure is made of brick and flint, with some areas featuring banded brickwork and parts rebuilt in red brick. The walls stand approximately 20 to 30 feet high and extend about 50 yards north from the rear of the High Street, continuing for 100 yards along the side of the Castle site to Castle Lane.
