Description

The Round House is an 1802 mill base, later converted into a house. The mill was removed to the foot of Race Hill in 1835. It is constructed of flint with red brick bands and dressings, and has a low-pitched slate roof. The building is octagonal in plan, with walls that noticeably slant inwards. It has one and a half storeys, with semi-dormers and a red brick stack at the roof apex. The ground floor has glazing bar sashes, while the upper floor has sliding sashes in alternate faces of the octagon. The entrance is located on the south side, within a high, deep, segment-headed recess. A 19th-century extension is attached to the west. The Round House was formerly the home of the novelist Virginia Woolf.
