Description

The School and Schoolhouse, built in 1837, is a dwelling attached to a school that has since been replaced by a 20th-century building. The structure features walls made of ashlar malmstone with flat arches and a plinth. The recessed south side is roughcast, while the south end gable is entirely tile-hung with scalloped bands. The roof is also decorated with scalloped bands and includes two dormers with cusped bargeboards. The large front gables have a similar cusped pattern on the bargeboards, and the eaves are designed with wider curves.

This long, narrow building consists of two projecting gabled wings, forming two L-shaped units that are joined together, with entrances located in the angles. It is one storey high with an attic. A notable feature is the series of cast-iron casement windows, which are composed of very small octagonal panes. Each of the coupled attic windows has three horizontal by eight vertical octagons, while the two recessed windows for the house and school each have three units of three by eight octagons. The two front gables feature large splayed bays with two tiers of five units, each consisting of three by eight octagons, and the northern gable has additional narrow end windows of two by eight octagons.

The house porch, made of Bath stone, has a gable above a Tudor arch. The roof extends to a lower eaves supported by posts, creating an open porch for the school entrance. Nearby, there is a stone inscribed with the year 1837. The south gable features a small four-cusped ogee window above a splayed bay with five casements, both of which have diagonal patterns in the cast-iron frames.
