Description

There are six tombchests located in the churchyard of St Swithin's Church in Martyr Worthy. These include a re-used medieval coffin lid and tombchests dedicated to the following individuals: Henry Nevill from 1795, Thomas Nevill from 1836, Ann Wharton and family from 1760, Betty Wharton and family from 1786, and Charlotte Hill from 1796.

The tombchests consist of two located to the south of the nave and three to the west. They date from the late 18th century to early 19th century, while the medieval coffin lid was reused in the late 19th century. The coffin lid is made of Portland stone and golden limestone, and it was discovered during restoration work on the church in 1865. It features a carved cross on top. The tombchests for Henry Nevill and Thomas Nevill are positioned beside this lid, while the tombchests for Ann Wharton, Betty Wharton, and Charlotte Hill are located to the west of the nave.
