Description

The Parish Church of St Mary is a large church featuring a chancel with a north chapel and a south vestry, a north transept, and a tower instead of a south transept, along with a nave and aisles. The chancel dates from the 13th century, while the rest of the church is primarily from the 14th century. It was restored by Sir Charles Barry in 1827 and again in 1902. Barry added the top of the tower in 1827, which was originally stuccoed with a spire above. In 1953, the spire and stucco were removed, revealing the red brick of the tower, a project carried out by architects Seely & Paget. Inside, there is a west gallery and a gallery in the north transept, which served as the private pew for the owners of Petworth House. Additionally, there is a statue at the west end of the north aisle depicting the third Lord Egremont, created by E H Bailey, R.A.
