Description

The Petworth War Memorial is located prominently by the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin on Church Street in Petworth. It is set within a paved stone enclosure formed by low walls and accessed by five steps. The memorial features a tall Latin cross made of Portland stone, which has decorative mouldings at the junction of the cross piece and shaft. This cross stands on an octagonal plinth made of Portland stone, which is supported by a two-stepped base. The plinth is adorned with further decorative carved mouldings in a foliate design. The south face of the plinth bears the inscription: IN PROUD AND/ PERPETUAL/ REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF/ PETWORTH WHO/ FOUGHT IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ LEST WE FORGET.

Additionally, a bronze plaque was later affixed to the enclosure wall, inscribed with: THIS TABLET/ COMMEMORATES/ THE MEN, WOMEN/ AND CHILDREN/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO DIED IN THE/ WAR/ 1939-1945.
