Description

School Hill House is a house that has been converted into offices and a surgery. It features an early to mid-18th century front, which may have a core dating back to the late 17th century. The building is constructed with grey headers and red brick quoins, along with dressings and moulded cornice bands on all floors. The cornice and panelled parapet conceal the roof, which has various stacks. The house has three storeys and a regular five-window front, with glazing bar sashes on all floors, each adorned with rendered triple keystones. The first-floor windows have cut brick gauged heads, while the windows above are plain gauged heads. The doorway is located in place of the second window from the right and features an eared architrave surround with a triangular pediment above, along with a panelled door and transom light. The west front is made of red brick with grey headers and includes a tall round-arched stair window. The garden front is covered with mathematical tiles and render.

Inside, the hall showcases mid-18th century fielded panelling, with early 18th century moulded raised and fielded panelling above it. There is a large eared fire-surround with reverse bolection moulding on the rectangular central panel and a moulded cornice-mantel. The ground-floor rooms facing School Hill have raised and fielded early 18th century panelling, along with an eared egg and dart decorated fire-surround featuring a marble staff-moulded inset and a Greek key frieze on the cornice, similar to the fire-surround in No 103, High Street. The two-flight return stair has column balusters without square knops, with three per tread, and features corniced tread-ends and carved cheek-pieces, along with Corinthian newels. The dado panelling is ramped, and the flattish rail has a ridge. The first-floor rooms have been significantly altered, but those facing School Hill retain early 18th century raised and fielded panelling, while other rooms have early 19th century panelling. A ground-floor room at the rear includes a late 18th century inlaid marble flushwork fire-surround with pseudo-fluted pilasters. The back stairs feature early 18th century spiral balusters leading from the first floor upwards.
