Description
This building on the south side of High Street, Lewes, is a house, now used as a shop. The core of the structure dates back to the 16th century, although it was substantially remodelled in the early 19th century. It is timber-framed and now covered with a stucco finish, topped with a slate roof and a single flat-headed dormer window. The building has three storeys and an attic, with a two-window front. It features glazing bar sash windows within moulded surrounds, accompanied by an entablature and consoles on the first floor. An iron balcony with lyre balustrades and anthemion decoration is positioned on the first floor, above a 20th-century shop front with a central glazed door. The balcony displays the words "PRINTING WORKS", and the sign "W.E.BAXTER Ld" is attached above the first floor. The interior includes a portion of the basement constructed of chalk blocks. The printing business, Baxters' the Printers, was founded in 1802 by John Baxter; his son, George Baxter, was known for developing the use of oils to print colours.
