Description
Fisher’s Buildings, also known as Fisher’s Cottage, Fisher’s Corner, and Fisher’s Lodge, is a group of cottages originally forming a timber-framed house, extended to create a layout around three sides of a square. The site was used as a workhouse in the early 19th century. The buildings date primarily to the 17th century, with significant additions in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The walls are constructed from malmstone ashlar, some of which is galletted, with brick quoins, cambered arches to the ground floor, and an ironstone plinth. The majority of Fisher’s Lodge is tile-hung, and the roofs are generally tiled with a gable on the east side of the Lodge. The external facades are two stories high and regularly spaced, with the south elevation (Lodge) featuring four windows, the east (Corner) four windows, and the north (Cottage) also four windows. Casement windows are present throughout. The entrances are through boarded doors set in plain frames. The courtyard elevations display exposed timber framing to Fisher’s Lodge and the south side of Fisher’s Corner, with brick nogging. A staircase block is integrated into the south-east angle. A small, single-story extension with a hipped roof, brought down to low eaves over brick walls, is located on the west side of the Lodge.
