CHAWTON Barn at Southfield Farm

Barn. Circa late C17. Timber-frame, clad in weather-boarding and with corrugated-iron hipped and half-hipped roof. PLAN: 5-bay barn with aisles on north and south sides, and with outshut at west end, possibly also an aisle; central threshing bay with opposing cart entrances, that on north side with midstrey. EXTERIOR: North side has central gabled cart entrance with plank double doors. North side has central cart entrance breaking eaves with plank double doors and with loft door on left. INTERIOR: Slightly jowled arcade-posts with curved braces to tie-beams and arcade-plates. Queen-post trusses with collars, diminished principals and clasped purlins. Common-rafter couples intact. Wall-framing at either end and wall-framing of west end aisle or outshut rebuilt in concrete blocks. A largely complete example of a circa late C17 timber-framed aisled barn.
