Description
The barn at Southfield Farm, dating from the late 17th century, is a timber-framed structure clad in weather-boarding and topped with a hipped and half-hipped roof made of corrugated iron. It features a five-bay design with aisles on both the north and south sides, and an outshut at the west end, which may also include an aisle. The central threshing bay has opposing cart entrances, with the entrance on the north side featuring a midstrey.
On the exterior, the north side is notable for its central gabled cart entrance, which has plank double doors. There is also a loft door to the left of the cart entrance, which breaks the eaves.
Inside, the barn showcases slightly jowled arcade-posts with curved braces connecting to the tie-beams and arcade-plates. It has queen-post trusses with collars, diminished principals, and clasped purlins, while the common-rafter couples remain intact. The wall framing at both ends and the wall framing of the west end aisle or outshut have been rebuilt using concrete blocks. This barn is a largely complete example of a late 17th-century timber-framed aisled barn.
