Description
West Meon War Memorial is situated in the churchyard of St John the Evangelist’s Church, which is also a listed building. This memorial is a variant of the Blomfield Cross of Sacrifice and features a square platform with a two-stepped octagonal base and plinth, from which a Latin cross rises. The front face of the cross is adorned with a reversed sword, carved in low relief.
The plinth includes inscriptions carved in relief, with the main dedicatory inscription stating: "IN MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ 'FOR US THE GLORIOUS/ DEAD HAVE STRIVEN/ THEY BATTLED THAT WE/ MIGHT BE FREE'/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'." The other sides of the plinth list the names of those who lost their lives.
