Description
Hinton Ampner Place is a house that was formerly a rectory, built around 1712 to 1717, with a wing added in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, including many blue bricks, and has an old plain tile roof. It features five bays, is two stories tall with an attic, and has a two-and-a-half bay extension to the left that is slightly set back. The house stands on a projecting plinth with rusticated brick quoins at the corners.
The central doorway is approached by two stone steps with wrought iron rails. It has a painted stone doorcase with rusticated Doric pilasters and an entablature that includes an unfluted triglyph frieze. The door itself has a large top panel with two smaller panels below, topped by a rectangular fanlight with diamond panes. On either side of the door, there are two tall 15-pane sash windows with rubbed brick heads. A string course runs along the first floor, starting as a quoin at each end. Above, there are five 12-pane sash windows with small rubbed brick heads. The windows in the bay to the right of the door have been moved, and the ground floor windows to the left have been rebuilt. The eaves are simply moulded and boxed.
The roof is hipped and features two hipped dormers with two-light casements. There are symmetrical stacks on the hips of the roof. The 20th-century wing is at a lower level and has two-and-a-half bays of sash windows with Dutch arches, along with a narrow sash window above the door in the half bay. The roof of this wing extends from the main roof and is also hipped, with two stacks on the hip.
