Description
South Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the late medieval period, originally featuring a timber-framed hall. It underwent significant extensions around 1600, which included the addition of fireplaces and an upper floor. The building was reclad in the late 18th century and early 19th century, with some minor additions made in the late 19th century. The walls are primarily constructed of brick, with the oldest sections in mixed English bond and Flemish bond above, along with small areas of malmstone and flint with brick dressings. The rear wall features flint with brick bands and a small exposure of the timber frame. The roof is tiled.
The west front of the house has two storeys and five windows, with small 20th-century upper casements and two early 19th-century sash windows on the ground floor in exposed frames. There is a pediment hood with an ornamental front above a plain doorframe and a half-glazed door. The long south elevation is similar and includes a 20th-century gabled porch with a boarded door. Inside, the timber frame is exposed in the crosswalls, and there is a massive chimney breast that was once attached to the outside of the hall.
