Description

This is a group of three buildings, numbers 70, 71, and 72 High Street, Lewes, originally a house and later converted into a row of shops. The core structure dates back to the 15th or 16th century, but it was substantially rebuilt in the 18th or early 19th century. The building is timber-framed and now covered with stucco, featuring even rusticated quoins. It has a moulded cornice parapet and a plain tiled roof.

Number 70 has three storeys and a single window front. A wide segmental bow window with slender sash windows with glazing bars is present on the first and second floors. A shop front from the late 19th or early 20th century is located on the ground floor, featuring a panelled and glazed door to the left and a plain panelled door to the right.

Number 71 has a shallow canted bay window on the first floor, also with a slender sash window with glazing bars. The shop front is from the mid-19th century and has a pair of half-glazed doors, one on either side.

Number 72 features channelled horizontal rustication on the first floor with a moulded string course above. A two-storey canted bay window with sash windows without glazing bars is present. The shop front, dating to around 1900, has a two-thirds glazed door on the right.
