Description

The Star Brewery Gallery, originally known as Beard's Brewery, is a brewery building that has been converted into a store. It dates from the late 18th century and underwent alterations in the 19th century. The structure features a mix of materials, including some rubble stone, flint, and brick, although it is predominantly brick, most of which is now painted. The roof is a plain tiled half-hipped design.

On the right side, there are three gabled dormers that are almost evenly spaced across the roof. The building has two storeys, a cellar, and an attic. The fenestration is irregular, with two windows on the first floor to the right and three windows on the ground floor to the left. There is a tall doorway on the left that reaches up to the eaves, featuring a boarded door and a transom light.

The left side is constructed of painted brick, with red brick used in the cross-wing above the eaves level of the main range to the right. The roofs are plain tiled, with a taller cross-gabled block to the right and a weather-boarded louvred housing on the ridge. There are two small stacks to the left. This section also has two storeys with a garret under the gable to the right, which includes a large window in the garret above. The fenestration is again irregular, with two windows on the first floor to the left and one on the ground floor. There are doorways on both the left and right of the centre.

Inside, there is a very large vaulted cellar to the north. The southern part of the building contains various pieces of brewery machinery of indeterminate date, including fermentation vats, a malting vat, and direct line-shafting for a steam engine, although the latter was removed at the time of the re-survey.
