Description
Riversdown is a Grade II* house currently used as a school. The building features a 14th-century timber-framed hall with 17th-century timber-framed internal additions and fireplaces. It has early 19th-century cladding and restoration work that includes many features from around 1900. The brick walls are constructed in Flemish Garden Wall bond, with some cambered openings and a large stepped buttress on the east elevation. The roof is tiled and hipped at the north end, extending to a low eaves on the west side, and includes narrow hipped dormers at two levels, along with hipped and half-hipped minor extensions. The large medieval hall's general form is visible externally, with walls rising one, two, and three storeys, creating irregular facades with minor projections from the main block and irregular fenestration. Most of the casements are small, and the south side features a narrow two-storeyed splayed bay that is tile-hung between the windows and topped with a steep hipped slate roof. There is also a gabled porch. The low wings and projecting features contribute to an interesting Art Nouveau exterior.
