Description

Hill Place is a country house built around 1800. It features yellow brickwork in Flemish bond with rubbed flat arches, a parapet with open panels filled with balustrading at the top, and a cornice with stone moulding above coupled brick modillions. The house has stone cills and a deep projecting plain stone plinth band.

The main block is square with symmetrical elevations. The north front has a half-hexagonal full-height central projection, consisting of two storeys and a semi-basement, with a window arrangement of 1.3.1. The windows are sashes set in reveals, with round-headed lights in recessed arches on the ground floor, one of which is filled. The entrance features a tall arched opening with a rusticated stone surround that is stepped above the arch. Inside, there are double doors with three panels above a flight of stone steps, flanked by walls that now support a wooden classical porch.

The south elevation, facing the garden, has a full-height segmental centerpiece with two storeys and a window arrangement of 1.3.1, including sashes, with the outer ground-floor windows being triple. The central window is tall and opens onto a flight of steps. The west elevation has a slightly projecting center and a window arrangement of 1.3.1. The east side mirrors this but includes a narrow lower service wing, which has matching features but is likely of a later date, extending from the north front eastwards and featuring four regular windows on the south elevation. Notably, the previously described slate mansard roof has been removed.
