Description
Nos 3 to 5 Church Lane is a row of cottages that dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. The buildings are timber-framed with wattle and daub infill, and brick infill in the lower panels, topped with a thatched roof. The original structure consists of a 3-bay 16th-century building for Nos 3 and 4, with 2 additional 17th-century bays added to the left for No. 5.
The cottages are two stories high and have a total of five bays, with the complete frame exposed. The entrance to No. 3 is located in a 20th-century flat-roofed extension attached to the right end, featuring a door and window. No. 5 has its doorway in an early 20th-century brick and timber lean-to at the left end. No. 4 has an early 20th-century leaded glazed door positioned at the right end of the central 16th-century bay.
The right 16th-century bay features 20th-century two-light casements on each floor. The other two 16th-century bays have two small 19th-century two-light casements, with a 19th-century two-light cast iron casement above, and a 20th-century two-light casement over the door, along with two single casements at the left end. The 17th-century bays include an 18th-century three-light casement in the right bay with a two-light casement above, and 20th-century casements in the left bay with a blocked opening above. The roof is hipped with a ridge piece, and the ridge of the 17th-century bays is slightly lower. There is a large ridge stack at the left end of the 16th-century part and small projecting stacks on the hips.
