Description
No. 139 High Street is a house dating from the late 17th century, with its elevation altered in the mid 18th century. The exterior features knapped flints, blocked stone quoins, and raised cement window surrounds. It has a dentilled cornice beneath a Horsham slab roof, which has an end stack to the right and three segment-headed dormers. The building is two storeys with attics and presents a four-window front, including a narrow window to the left. The windows are fitted with glazing bar sashes, and there is a panelled door at the extreme left, topped with a flat hood supported by brackets. A central downpipe with a rainwater head is dated 1654. It appears that the building was extended at some point by one bay, as indicated by the redundant quoins up to the ground-floor window head level. Inside, there is a stone-flagged entrance hall and a staircase featuring open twist balusters. The two front rooms have fielded panelling, with the room to the left of the front door boasting a marble fire-surround.
