Description
Crossways, also known as the Little Brown Cottage, is a group of three cottages dating from the 17th century, with early and late 19th-century extensions and some 20th-century features. The timber frame is exposed on the north-east side, with brick infill and part of the front, while the other walls are made of painted brickwork and rendering. The cottages have a tile roof with brick dentil eaves at the front.
The building is a small range positioned at right angles to the roadway, raised and altered. The north-west front elevation of No. 1 is two storeys high with two windows featuring 20th-century casements and a boarded door in a plain frame. The south-west elevation displays the double gable of the front part and the set-back elevations of Nos. 2 and 3, which are two storeys at different levels, with 1.4 above 2.5 windows. One doorway is topped with a canopy supported by cast-iron columns and features a five-panelled door, while two other doorways are plain.
