Description
Gables Cottage, located at 55 Southover High Street in Lewes, is a house dating from the 17th century that was refronted in the mid-19th century. It features a timber frame with cladding made of hung tiles arranged in decorative bands of plain, scalloped, and beaver-tail tiles. The roof is covered with Horsham slabs and has two symmetrical crosswings with plain bargeboards. A tall chimney stack is positioned at the left end of the ridge. The building has two storeys and attics, with a three-window front. On the left side, there is a single sash window without glazing bars, while the right side features a larger square oriel window with a flat head supported by curved brackets. The first floor has double sash windows without glazing bars in the outer bays and a single sash without glazing bars in the middle. The ground floor also has sash windows without glazing bars, and there is a central boarded door. To the south, there are mid to late 19th-century cast-iron railings topped with acorn heads, arched between the posts, and featuring dog-rails.
