Description
Soberton House is an 18th-century house with early 19th-century extensions and alterations in Regency style. The building features walls of painted brickwork in English bond, with stucco applied to the Regency section and tile-hanging on the south elevation. It has a tiled roof with hips at the rear and is L-shaped, with a later extension to the north and rear.
The symmetrical west front elevation is two storeys and an attic, with three widely spaced windows. The ground floor has a triple sash window, and the off-centre porch is designed in a slender and exaggerated Greek Doric Order, featuring two pilasters and two fluted columns in the upper two-thirds, along with a wide doorway that includes coupled half-glazed doors and narrow side panes.
The rear elevation, also stuccoed, is symmetrical on the north side, with two windows above one, and a large triple sash window on the ground floor that reaches to floor level. The other part of this elevation swells outward, showcasing an arched staircase window. The south side retains the remains of an 18th-century staircase wing, which has two levels of hipped roofing with a narrow span, and includes a rear doorway with a simple canopy on posts and a half-glazed door. The remaining elevations display a vernacular character and detail. Inside, there is a fine curving staircase.
