Description

Marwell House is a small country house dating from the 18th century, with additions from the 19th century and around 1935. The building is constructed of brick and has hidden slate roofs. The original structure is a 6 by 3 bay house from the early 18th century, with two similar bays added to the left in the late 18th century and two lower bays added to the right. In the 19th century, two further bays were added, and another bay was added to the left around 1935.

The front of the house is two storeys high, featuring eight main bays and four lower service bays to the right. The flat front has early Flemish bond brickwork. The doorway, located in the fifth bay from the left, features a 6-panelled door from the 18th century set in an arched doorcase with engaged columns, a broken entablature, a lentil open pediment, and a wrought iron fanlight added in the 20th century. There is an iron tie across the central bays at the first-floor string level.

All windows are 18th-century 12-pane sashes with rubbed brick heads. The building has a plain parapet with stone coping that conceals the hipped slate roofs. There are stacks on the parapet between the second and third bays from the left, on the ridge above the door, and at either end of the main 18th-century part. The lower service wing features an 18th-century 6-panel door and a 12-pane sash window, with two short 16-pane sashes above. The two bays from the 18th and 19th centuries have a large 12-pane sash on the ground floor and a smaller one above, with interior alterations made around 1955.
