Description
The remains of the inner gatehouse and walls date back to the 12th century and are constructed of flint with stone dressings. The central arch features a slightly larger arch opening to the north. The wall extends to the north-east of this arch, varying in height between 10 and 15 feet for about 8 yards. There is an additional stretch of wall on the eastern side of the arch, built at later dates, which continues for about 5 yards and drops from a height of approximately 20 feet to the ground. Further stretches of wall lead west and south from the west side of the arch; the western stretch is about 30 yards long, while the southern stretch is around 5 yards, both standing approximately 15 feet high from the floor of the former moat.
