Description
The gateway to the orchard, located 50 meters west of the estate office at Longwood, was built around 1880 by G. Devey. The gateway is constructed of flint with stone dressing, featuring a timber-frame upper stage that is tile-hung, topped with a plain tile roof. The attached stables are made of brick and also have a tiled roof.
The structure includes a three-storey tower with a four-centred dressed stone arch, and a rectangular window above it that has a corbelled and crenellated stone sill, along with a wrought iron screen. The top storey is jettied and features splayed tile hanging over the ends of the joists. The roof is hipped with overhanging eaves.
On each side of the tower, there is a single-storey stable with a tall roof. Although the original stable doors have been replaced with wider double doors, the original door and window remain on the left side. The roof of the stables is half-hipped against the side of the tower and gabled at the outer end. To the right, there is an additional stable and cartshed, which complete the front range, while cottages at the other end complete the overall range.
