Description

The stable block, located approximately 20 meters northeast of the Hall, retains parts that date back to 1691 and 1697, but was significantly altered in 1860. It is constructed of red and yellow coursed sandstone and features a low-pitched hipped slate roof. The building has a 'U'-shaped plan with an enclosed yard at the rear and a classic symmetrical frontage that includes a moulded eaves band.

The stable block is two storeys high and has a relatively long, low frontage divided into five bays: two outer bays with blind round-headed windows on the ground floor, plain square windows on the first floor, and two new windows positioned to the left of the ground floor. The windows are 2-light casements. There is a slight central pedimented break above an elliptical coach arch, which has an impost string and features a clock in the tympanum. An ogee-domed cupola sits behind the arch, resting on corner piers.

A datestone inscribed "PLB 1860" (for Phillip Lancaster Brocklehurst) is located at the keystone of the coach arch. The side elevations consist of three bays with similar detailing, and the northeast side has two datestones on the ground floor far left inscribed "WN" and a cavetto labelled on the first floor right "16 WTC 97" inscribed "WN", both relating to a time when the estate was owned by the Trafford family.
