Description
The lychgate, dating from the mid 19th century, is located southwest of Rowsley Church. It features coursed squared sandstone and ashlar, with a timber superstructure topped by a hipped tiled roof that has a gableted top. The structure is built into the hillside and is accessed by a broad flight of seven stone steps, which are flanked by curving coursed stone walls that have chamfered copings and ashlar end piers.
The lychgate itself consists of two substantial parallel ashlar walls with a vermiculated finish and chamfered coping, positioned on either side of a further flight of five steps. The rectangular timber superstructure includes diagonal curved and cross bracing, with stop-chamfered mouldings. It is completed by a pair of wooden gates that feature straight braces and trefoils.
