Description
Rowsley Bridge, which dates back to the 15th century, was widened in the 1920s. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar, with a modern road surface laid on granite setts. The bridge spans the River Derwent and is oriented roughly north to south.
It is a multi-span bridge featuring five arches. The east side remains largely unaltered, showcasing wide, stepped pointed arches that are separated by triangular cutwaters with stepped sloping tops. The straight parapet has triangular coping stones. The west side mirrors the general form of the east side but features segmental arches, and its parapet has flat coping stones. An inscription on the parapet wall reads, ‘ROWSLEY BRIDGE / WIDENED 1925-6 / J W HORTON, M INST CE / COUNTY SURVEYOR / C F TOMLINSON / CONTRACTOR’.
