Description

Numbers 25 and 26 are a pair of early 19th-century houses with attached front garden walls, situated on the north side of North Church Street in Bakewell. The houses are constructed of coursed, tooled sandstone with ashlar dressings, and have a concrete tile roof. They are three storeys high and have a two-window range, presenting an asymmetrical facade, with the entrance to the left house (Number 26) located on the first floor. Both houses feature broad ashlar surrounds for the doors and windows, including projecting sills. Number 25 on the right has an 8/8 sash window on the ground and first floors, and a 4/8 sash window on the second floor. Number 26 on the left features a rear passage opening offset to the right, beneath 20th-century casement windows on each upper floor, and a part-glazed 4-panelled door leading to the head of the steps. A broad ashlar ridge stack is positioned at the centre of the pair. The interior has not been inspected. The front garden walls contribute to the group value of the setting; the wall in front of Number 25 is low with flat copings and round-headed piers, while the wall in front of Number 26 ramps up to retain the front steps and then returns to adjoin the house.
