Description

Old Ralphs is a late 18th-century herdsman's cottage that was uninhabited at the time of inspection in 2003. The building features a facade made of coursed stone, with rubble stone walls on the sides and rear, and a stone cill plate. It has a pitched slate roof and is a two-bay cottage with two ranges.

The exterior showcases a coursed stone facade with quoins, a door to the left, a large window opening on the ground floor, and a smaller window opening above, which still has fragments of its window frame. All openings are framed with wide lintels and quoins made of chamfered rusticated stone blocks. To the right, there is a small window on the left side of the gable, followed by a lower attached range in rubble stone that has a door opening to the right under a large stone lintel, along with a window opening in its gable, also with a stone lintel. The rear elevation is constructed of rubble stone, featuring large stone quoins and two ground floor openings in the main range.

Inside, the ground floor is noted for having a tall large fireplace with a wooden surround. To the right, there is a wooden cupboard recessed into the wall. The staircase opposite the entrance has lost its steps but retains a stick balustrade leading to the first floor. The window openings have splayed surrounds.

This late 18th-century herdsman's cottage, with its well-crafted stone walls and preserved interior features, makes an important contribution to the striking Moorlands landscape.
