Description

The Church of St John, along with the attached school and school house, is a Chapel of Ease built in 1842. It is constructed from coursed stone with block dressings and features a blue machine tile roof with verge parapets. The building has an unusual design, with the church located on the first floor above the school and adjoining school house, all under the same ridge.

The structure has end stacks for the accommodation, with the main block featuring an octagonal stack. The frontage is two to three storeys high, consisting of three bays. The church and school on the left side have a two-storey section with 32-pane fixed lights on the first floor and two three-light mullioned casements on the ground floor. A flat-roofed single-storey porch is situated between these sections, with steps leading to a lower set-back two-storey porch. The first-floor entrance has a moulded surround and a corbelled hood, which is dated on the south side. A bellcote is positioned over the south gable of the church, along with a cross above the porch.

The school house features two-light mullioned casements with labels, and a 20th-century door to the left. There is a lower recessed two-storey wing on the right that is similar in design. The frontage is adorned with cast iron railings of the spearhead type, including gates, which are set on a stone plinth and extend up to stone end posts.
